EAA September 2007 News
September 2007 Meeting Minutes and Update
We had a great turnout for the September meeting!
President Michael Strange welcomed everyone, then started the business portion of the meeting. First order of business was the EAA Logo. We received a lot of great designs and we appreciate everyone who participated. Copies of the designs submitted were passed out for everyone to choose their favorite. With so many wonderful ideas to choose from, it was difficult for some of us to make a selection! Michael gave us a little time to do that while he turned the discussion to upcoming events.
The first Elgin Art Walk – October 13. Point of contact: Dave Warner. Dave gave us an update – there are 32 artists signed up and coordinated with downtown businesses. An article was printed in the Elgin Courier with a list of some of the participating artists. In addition, information is available on the Art in Elgin website: www.artinelgin.com.
Pearls Art Show – October 25. Cheridah Vaughn had applications available at the meeting. For those who were unable to attend, you may download an application and guidelines from the Art in Elgin website or from the City of Elgin website www.elgintx.com. Several entries have already been received. The postmark deadline for mailed entries was October 1; however, there’s still time to enter! Just take your completed entry form and photos to Gary Vaughn at Kingfisher Fine Art & Music Gallery by October 6; or you may drop them by the Vaughn house at 19 N. Ave A no later than October 8. If you have any questions regarding entering the show, contact Cheridah cheridah@mail.utexas.edu.
In addition to artist entries, the Pearls Art Show needs donations of auction items to raise money for the scholarship fund and volunteers to help during the opening reception. A sign-up sheet was available at the meeting. If you missed the meeting and would like to know what volunteer positions are still needed, or you wish to donate an item for the auction, please contact Cheridah.
Gary Newton announced that the Pearls Art Show Committee had voted to merge with Elgin Arts Association. All monetary assets of the Pearls Art Show will be donated to the Elgin Arts Association, with the funds dedicated to production of future Pearls shows and for the awarding of scholarships for individuals wishing to further their arts education.
Hogeye Festival – October 27. As mentioned in the past, the Hogeye Festival committee is going to place Elgin Artists together when booths are assigned. The deadline for the $100 booth fee was October 1; booth fees after the deadline are $125. Artists will be allowed to share booths.
Once the event discussion was completed, it was time to count the votes for the Elgin Arts Association logo. The voting was close… but we have a winner! The Elgin Arts Association logo, chosen by majority vote, was designed by Mr. Gary Vaughn. The logo can be seen on the Elgin Arts Association website: www.elginartsassociation.com. Thanks again to everyone who took the time to participate – you all did a great job!
Once the business was over, it was time for the highlight of our meeting…. (drum roll, please…) Michael turned the floor over to Elizabeth Sullivan, a spirited watercolor artist who recently relocated to Elgin. Elizabeth fascinated us with her world-renowned watercolor technique and taught us a few things while demonstrating. Did you know that toilet paper is an art supply? But don’t go stocking up on Charmin – the ruff-tuff single-ply port-a-potty paper is the best! During Elizabeth’s delightful demonstration, some of her prints and originals were circulated through the room, giving us even more insight to her talent and versatility. (Some of the prints went home with new "EC Sullivan" fans!) Elizabeth’s demonstration was enjoyed immensely and she received a standing ovation afterward. (If you’d like to see pictures from the meeting, visit www.elginartsassociation.com.) On behalf of EAA, thank you, Elizabeth, for sharing your talent with us!
Before calling it a night, Michael asked the "new faces in the crowd" to introduce themselves. Doris Miller, who is now a member, introduced herself. Doris works in watercolors, acrylics and fabric. Welcome, Doris! Also at the meeting was Deitra (Dee) Morris. Dee will be teaching "Back to Clay the Old Fashioned Way" pottery classes at Nancy Lou Webster’s WW Treenware Co. For information, visit www.artinelgin.com/workshops.asp. Welcome, Dee!
Quick note: If you'd like electronic copy of the logo to use on your website, please e-mail Lynette@LynetteHampton.com.
The next meeting is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 18, at Kingfisher Fine Art & Music Gallery. All artists and supporters of the arts are welcome to attend. Spread the word and feel free to bring a friend! We look forward to seeing you on the 18th!
