EAA September 2009 News
EAA Update – Meeting Thursday, September 17, 2009
EAA Treasurer Elizabeth Sullivan was out of town and unavailable to give
the Treasurer’s Report. so it was deferred until the next meeting.
Lynette gave a re-cap of the Mini Workshop series by Jan Knight. Jan
showed us how to throw a slab with clay, how to add interesting
textures and build a “wall pocket.” In Part 2 of the workshop, we
learned how to bring out the details of the textures with glazing by
applying colored glaze, wiping the glaze of certain areas, then
applying another color of glaze. We were given our choice of sealing
with a gloss or matte finish. Since Jan’s workshop focused on
technique, each student used their own concepts for the design of
their projects. The end result – each student went home with unique,
beautiful creations reflecting their own style!
Lynette expressed her appreciation for Jan and all those who have participated as instructors of the mini-workshops during 2009. It has been a very effective way of finding out what others in our group do, learning a bit about their techniques and what it is like to work in different media.
The workshops have been a very successful part of our program for the past year, and we would like to continue the program for 2010. Those wishing to participate as instructors for 2010 are urged to contact Sarah Page so that our next year’s workshops can be scheduled.
Sarah gave a brief report on the August 27 Committee Meeting:
The committee focused exclusively on plans for Pearls. The major concern was securing a location and considerations regarding the length of time the location will be needed. Rosemary offered to survey available locations. Names were generated for Judges for the show and volunteers were present to contact them. Plans for press release were discussed and Lynette offered to send the initial Pearls press release. Sarah offered to draft a letter to local businesses regarding donations for the silent auction. Cheridah provided her list of donors from previous years. NOTE: Would you like to get involved with the Committee? We’d love to have you! Contact Sarah for more info!
During the EAA Membership Meeting, Sarah suggested (as a longer term solution regarding location) that EAA prepare a proposal to be presented to owners of some of Elgin’s empty buildings for an Arts Initiative agreement. Lynette expressed that she has already done an enormous amount of research on this topic and will pull together an outline for a proposal. Once the outline is complete, committee members can meet to work out the details (after Pearls, of course).
In November EAA members will be voting for a Vice President and a Treasurer Greg Silkenson is nearing the end of his first term as Vice President; Elizabeth Sullivan is completing the remainder of a term after she was elected to fill a vacancy. Both of these current board members are eligible for another term if they choose to “run”. The Nominating committee members for this election are:
Nancy Lou Webster – treennlw@yahoo.com
Ava Barker - e3bccs@sbcglobal.net
Rosemary Wentworth - celery4@austin.rr.com
Mike Krone - m_krone2005@yahoo.com
PLEASE REMEMBER: If you would like to nominate an individual, please be sure to ask them first. You must have their permission to nominate them.
Any nominees should be sent to one of the Nominating Committee members by the end of October.
Sarah reported that the letters are ready to be mailed to local business regarding donations to the silent auction.
Shirley and Ava agreed to contact some businesses in person regarding donations. Becky agreed to contact by phone the businesses that would not be contacted personally.
Lynette passed around a sign up sheet for tasks for the night of PEARLS and while the show is on exhibit the weekend of Hogeye.
PEARLS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
OK, we’ve got the ball – let’s run with it!
Attached is a sign up sheet showing the slots that people have already volunteered for and the ones for which we still need volunteers.
Please email Sarah Page or Lynette Hampton as soon as possible with the time slots for which you would like to volunteer.
The next meeting will be held on October 17 from 10am – 1pm. This will be a work day for PEARLS. The “meeting” will be at the PEARLS location, Back Forty Chiropractic.
We previously reserved the library meeting room for that day; it was decided that we will retain the room at the library in case we need extra workspace.
Discussion then turned to signs and sandwich boards. Shirley agreed to contact the city regarding what sandwich boards might be available in storage. The possibility of purchasing some affordable signs to use as yard signs was discussed. Shirley will email Sarah with info on a local provider.
The concept for the postcard invitation was discussed. It was agreed that the postcard design would feature a photo of artwork being appreciated by “Priscilla”.
A formal motion was made by Nancy Lou Webster to re-instate the original name for this event, “Pearls before Swine”. The motion was seconded by Rosemary Wentworth. Lynette called for a vote. The motion was carried by a unanimous vote. Lynette advised us that according to our agreement with the Pearls Committee in accepting the responsibility for the show we agreed to keep the name “Pearls Art Show” for 2009. It was decided that the name re-instatement would be made after the October 2009 show.
Shirley shared a concept for possible action: Kid’s Art in cooperation with the school art departments, a “Draw your Dad” contest just prior to Father’s Day. Thanks Shirley! Keep those ideas coming!
Nancy Lou adjourned the meeting at 8:20 pm.
p.s. This had to be the best meeting we’ve ever had! It’s a good thing the library closed else they’d have had to come shush us! “The most wasted of all days is one without laughter.” ~e.e. cummings We did not waste a moment!!!
