November 2008 Meeting Minutes and Update
The Elgin Arts Association meeting was held November 18, 2008. We
had quite a lively group and appreciate everyone's attendance.
President Michael Strange called the meeting to order. With his term as President nearing an end, he personally thanked everyone for their support over the past year, taking a moment to extend a special thanks to a few individuals who went the extra mile over the past year - Cheridah & Gary Vaughn, Ava Barker, Sarah Page, Elizabeth Sullivan, Nancy Lou Webster, and fellow board members (note from Lynette: if I left anybody out, it's not intentional - feel free to put a "kick me" sign on my back at the next meeting). Michael emphasized that the first year of organizing and getting things rolling was a group effort and everyone's support was greatly appreciated.
Gary Vaughn shared the sad news that Kingfisher Fine Art & Music Gallery will be closing January 1. Bill & Margie have been very supportive of the artists in our community and they and the gallery will definitely be missed. After the gallery closes, Vaughn's Guitar Repair will continue from Gary's studio.
Elizabeth gave an overview of participation in the Design Access "Meet the Artist Days." Since Design Access is only open 9am-5pm Monday-Friday, she realizes that it may be difficult for those with weekday jobs to participate and has graciously offered to take items to design access for exhibit/sale. She reminded everyone to be sure to include contact info (business cards or brochures) with their work. Ruth at Design Access would like to have artists work in her shop every day from December 1 through Christmas. Items do not have to be home decor items - designers purchase Christmas gifts, too! So jewelry and other forms of art are acceptable. (For complete details on how to participate, see the email sent November 12 with subject "Artist Days at Design Access" or contact Elizabeth at ecsullivanart@aol.com.)
Lynette reminded everyone that the deadline is approaching quickly for the Artist Showcase at Holiday by the Tracks. Applications should be sent to Barry Perez (bdperez621@hotmail.com) by Friday, November 21. Application information was sent by email October 26; more recently in a reminder dated November 17.
Greg Silkenson gave the Treasurer's Report. The previous balance was $368.57. $50 was raised by the Weekend of Workshops; $22 in donations were accepted during Hogeye Festival; and new member dues of $75 were received; which will bring the balance to $515.57.
Welcome to new members Lisa Shell (Kai Mohair) and Rosemary Wentworth. Lisa is a fiber artist that works with mohair from her own herd of angora goats; Rosemary works in a variety of media and uses expressive arts in counseling. Welcome!!!
The next item on the agenda was judging the entries from the children's art activity at the November Art Walk. Thanks to everyone for helping judge these entries. We will be contacting the winners and awarding prizes within the next couple of weeks. A very special thanks goes to Stephanie Shroyer-McNabb, Les Warren and Kathy Ambuster for volunteering their time to help children express their creativity during the November Art Walk!
The final order of business was the election of new Board members. President Michael Strange conducted the election, stating the officer candidates chosen by the nominating committee and asking if there were nominations from the floor. There being no nominations from the floor, Michael moved to accept the nominees by acclamation. All members present voted unanimously in favor of the candidates chosen by the nominating committee.
Effective January 1, 2009, officers of the Elgin Arts Association are:
Lynette Hampton, President
Greg Silkenson, Vice President
Sarah Page, Secretary
Elizabeth Sullivan, Treasurer
A question arose regarding meeting dates for 2009. It has been brought to our attention that there are many with schedule conflicts on Tuesday evenings. Lynette will be sending a survey in the near future to help determine a better meeting day, as well as find ways to involve members who are not able to attend weekday evening meetings.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned.
The next meeting of the Elgin Arts Association is Thursday, December 18 at the Chamber of Commerce meeting room. This will be a pot-luck celebration - everyone is welcome to attend! Bring a dish to share and bring a friend!
PS: Candy thrown during the meeting was compliments of Frank Brabec - THANKS, Frank!!!
